ABOUT MUSSOORIE

The Queen's Neclace

Once called the Queen of the hills- Ideals for weekend. You will find that the air is still pure & invigorating, the mountains majestic, and the plains below green and verdant to the jaded eye.

Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the 34-Km drive up the steep, winding road, with its innumerable hairpin bends. For your time in Mussoorie begins as you leave Dehradun to begin the uphill climb.

Enjoy the changing scenery, the variation in Flora and the sudden drop in temperature as you approach the hill station.
The first (the best) view of Mussoorie comes up as you take the bend before Bhata village. Quite suddenly you see the great ramp of Mussoorie in all its Panoramic Splendor. Half an hour later you are in the Hill Station.

Mussoorie is in the mountains (about 6500 ft up in the Himalayas) and far from the sea, but in many ways it shares the characteristics of an English seaside Resort packed with people in the summer months, still and silent with a white Christmas in the winter, while the monsoon mist will remind you of the Scottish highlands, except that it is warmer.
Mussorrie, like other hill-stations of India was almost entirely an invention of the British. It is in fact, just a little over 160 years old.

Stand beneath these Deodars and listen to the wind. These trees have witnessed the entire history of Mussorrie. They are much older than hill station- they were here when the Mansuri ridge had just a few shepherds' huts, when sheep and cattle grazed on the Mansur shrub which was so plentiful and which gave the place its name.

Today, people like to go beyond the hill station. The small wayside halt of Dhanolti has become very popular. As indeed has Kanataal further on. Between the two is the temple of Surkhanda Devi dedicated to one of the incarnations of Parwati. It has become increasingly popular with visitors.

To the west is the Kempty Waterfall & Yamuna Bridge and further on, the old 13th century temple at Lakhdamandal in the fascinating Jaunsar region. Here, in the hills a new vista opens up at every bend in the road- New Vistas, and The charm of the unexpected.
